MCA-T Overview
Mr. Bernard S. Mchomvu
MCA-T Chief Executive Officer
Millennium Challenge Account-Tanzania (MCA-T) is an independent and autonomous Government Entity established by the Government of United Republic of Tanzania to implement a compact under a grant of $ 698 million from the Government of the United States of America through Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) to reduce poverty by improving transport, energy and water infrastructure and thereby promoting economic growth”.
MCA-T is supported by Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a United States government agency designed to work with developing countries. The MCC model is based on the principle that aid is most effective when it reinforces good governance, economic freedom and investments in people.
Tanzania became eligible for a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact in 2005 when it successfully completed a Threshold Program and passed certain indicators that demonstrated the government of Tanzania potentially invests in people, rules justly, and has economic freedom. In September 2007, MCC approved the five-year Compact amounting to US $698 million that was signed by the former President of the United States of America, George W. Bush, and President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete in February 2008 at the State House in Dar es Salaam.
Since this historic event of signing the Compact substantial implementation progress has been made. The goal of the Compact is to reduce poverty by stimulating economic growth, leading to an increase in household earnings and better quality of life.
